The eight stages

Stage 4 of 8

Planetesimal

Gains: Gravity

Your gravity wakes up. Pull bodies in and snowball.

At a kilometer wide, your own gravity finally matters, and the chase reverses.

A kilometer-scale planetesimal bending the paths of nearby rocks with gravity.

Your gravity wakes up

Cross a kilometer or so and something changes for good. You are now massive enough that your own gravity reaches out and bends the paths of things near you. You are a planetesimal, a true building block of worlds, and you no longer wait for the universe to drift past. You pull it in.

A large planetesimal among many smaller bodies, growing fastest.

Runaway growth

Gravity rewards the biggest. The largest planetesimal in a neighborhood pulls hardest, so it grows fastest, so it pulls harder still. This is runaway growth, and it is how a few bodies race ahead of the millions around them, eating their smaller siblings and clearing room to become something more.

True things

  • Planetesimals range from about a kilometer to hundreds of kilometers across.
  • Most asteroids and comets are planetesimals left over from the Solar System's birth.
  • Runaway growth can build a Moon-sized body from planetesimals in only tens of thousands of years.
